FEAR:
This refers to the art of being afraid to do something or act.
Fear
of success is actually quite common, and it can cause us to lose out on
a lot of opportunities in life. When we're too afraid to take risks and
move forward on our goals – either consciously or unconsciously – we
get stuck in one place, neither moving forward nor backward.
Successful
people...focus on the rewards of success: learning from their mistakes
and thinking about how they can improve themselves and their situations.
(John Maxwell, Your Road Map for Success, http://www.inspirational-quotes.info/failure, 2014)
Fear takes many forms, some of the forms are fear to start something,
fear of failure, fear of taking risk, fear of people or to others, fear
of opposition, fear of making mistakes, fear of the devil, and fear of
the unknown (Charles Godfm, Enemies of Success, 2014 – p18).
The fear to start something:
This
is a barrier to success. Many Christians are suffering because they
fear to take initiatives or start to do business or something that will
earn them a living. Life starts from somewhere and ends somewhere,
little drops of water makes a mighty ocean. If Christians fear to take
initiatives, how can they progress in life? All those who have been able
to make it in life or are successful started from somewhere and have
ended up great for them. If a person says to himself that he cannot
succeed in taking initiative then it shall come to pass because he has
set up the mind that ‘it is impossible for him to succeed’.
It is
common to notice energetic young people who feel inferior to approach
the experienced and successful people in life for advice on how to start
business in their life. Shyness on the part of some Christian people is
making life challenging for them. Shyness is a feature of fear, so
anyone who feels shy in learning from others always makes mistakes.
Respect is different from shyness; some people think being of shy means
being respectful but that is not the reality.
In the Bible, when a
master of three servants travelled, he left money for each servant in
different amount to invest for him. Two of these servants ‘the first and
the second’ had the courage to work with the money to make profit, but
the third servant refused and dug the ground and hides the money in the
soil. Fear made this servant to dig the ground and hides the money in
the soil. When the master returned, he called them to make an account.
The first servant with the highest amount was able to make profit for
the master out of what his was given, likewise the second servant, but
the third servant told the master that he was afraid that he could not
make profit out of the money given to him, so he hide the money in a
hole he dug on the ground. The master rewarded the first and second
servants but the third servant was not rewarded. It is the same today,
fear have made some people not to invest into their future. The master
of the servants said ‘those who cultivate harvest, harvest bountifully’
so if one puts fear of starting away, then success will be at hands of
the unfearful and hard determined Christian.
(Matthew 25:14 - 30)
For
the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who
called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
And unto
one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every
man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.
After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five
talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I
have gained beside them five talents more.
His lord said unto him,
Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a
few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into
the joy of thy lord.
He also that had received two talents came and
said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained
two other talents beside them.
His lord said unto him, Well done,
good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I
will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy
lord.
Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord,
I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not
sown, and gathering where thou hast not strowed:
And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant,
thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not
strowed:
Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the
exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with
usury.
Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
For
unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance:
but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Fear
is the killer of success. Many Christians have given up in life out of
fear. Today many Christians are not successful in evangelism, church
planting, youth ministry and other ministerial work because they fear
that they may not succeed when they start. Fear is a barrier of success.
The fear of failure:
The fear of failure on the part of many Christians hinders success.
Many people are not successful because they fear to take risk. Some
people fear of the past failure they have had before and hence decides
not to take any initiative again.
Life is always about ups and
downs, nothing is easy in life and those who have the fear of failure
become unsuccessful in living a fulfilled Christian life.
The fear of taking risk:
Fear
of taking risk is the failure of success. It hinders the growth of
living a successful Christian life. Some Christians are not able to make
it in life because they fear to take risk. (Job 3:25), “For the thing
which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of
is come unto me.”
The fear of people:
Being respectful does not
mean you fear people. Fearing people means not able to make your
intentions known, shy to associate with others, idleness and isolation
and unable to reason with others. Some Christians even deny their faith
and follow societal norms and prestige because of fear. Inferiority
complex is a form of fear of people.
Fear of opposition:
Many
visions and ideas are killed by laughter and ridicule. So many people
are not willing to face opposition in life. Opposition is natural life,
everybody on earth has an opposition, without opposition, dreams, and
objectives will be a nightmare. For a Christian to be successful, he or
she must recognise there is opposition in evangelism, youth ministry,
and discipleship.
Fear of making mistakes:
There is no
success without paying a price. Success is not something one gets
easily, one ought to fight for it. Because we are living in an imperfect
world, we are bound to make mistakes. Fear of making mistakes prevents
one from being successful. If a Christian wants to live a successful
Christian life, he must accept that mistakes do happen in speeches,
teaching, friendship and many others. In achieving a goal, challenges
may come and does not mean one should stop pursuing the aims or
objectives set.
Fear of the devil:
Many Christians are
ignorant of the unlimited powers of our master Jesus Christ, and fear
the devil. Some Christians are afraid to embark on evangelism in certain
rural areas where there is a perception that demons are abundant in
their numbers.
In Cape Coast of Ghana, it is common to notice people
not visiting their home town or village because they fear that they may
be killed by witches or wizards in the village. If Christians will
recognise that Jesus Christ is above all gods, witches and wizards,
demons, and principalities, then a successful Christian life can be
achieved.
(Isaiah 41:10), “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not
dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help
thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
(1John
4:4), “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because
greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
(Philippians
2:10), “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in
heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.”
Fearing the devil and his agents hinders a successful Christian life.
Fear of the unknown:
Some Christians are not able to live a successful Christian life due to the fear of things that do not even exist.
In
Africa Traditional Religious belief, there are certain cultural and
custom values that have put fear into some Christians. These African
Traditional cultural values includes; no whistle blowing in the night,
no singing whilst bathing, no sweeping in the night and many others. Why
some Christians have imbibed in them because the family he or she found
himself in may not really be a Christian home and hence may believe
them.
Fear can dominate a man to the extent that he may not become what he is destined to be.
